Abstract: Almost every country throughout the world is struck by the rising water scarcity caused by increased water requirements due to rising population and industrial development. The situation calls for improving the existing management strategies of water resources and exploring new alternatives to supplement water supplies. Water reuse is an emerging source of water supply. Wastewater treatment and reuse are of prime importance in attaining water safety and environmental sustainability. But, public acceptance has hindered the growth of water reuse projects in almost every country globally. In the present study, a social survey has been conducted to assess the intention of the residents to reuse treated wastewater in India. The extended theory of planned behavior has been applied to identify the peoples’ behavior towards water reuse. The empirical results show that factors like attitude, intention, trust in government authorities, environmental mindfulness, information about the merits of reusing treated water, etc. are pivotal in influencing the perception of the community. Also, there is a strong correlation between the observed factors. The results indicate that there is strong public support for water reuse but it is squandered due to limited awareness and non- incorporation of the public’s views in the planning stages. The study might be beneficial for developing a holistic framework for the implementation of water reuse schemes including public support in India.
