Integration of Geospatial Analysis and Field Data for Landslide Risk Mapping at Bau Trang Lake

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This study evaluates landslide risks in the Bau Trang Lake area, Vietnam, by integrating field data, geospatial analysis, and geotechnical modeling. Bau Trang Lake, a critical ecological and economic site, faces increasing landslide threats driven by hydrogeological dynamics and human activities, particularly unregulated tourism. Using seven thematic maps - geology, topography, slope, soil properties, water permeability, mechanical strength, and land use impacts – this research develops a hazard map categorizing the area into five risk levels: very low, low, medium, high, and very high. High-risk zones, concentrated along the southern and southwestern shores of Bau Ba, are characterized by steep slopes, loose sandy soils, and high water permeability, exacerbated by seasonal rainfall and human-induced soil compaction. The findings highlight the ecological and economic significance of high-risk zones, which include key tourism destinations. To mitigate risks, the study recommends structural solutions like retaining walls and geotextiles, alongside non-structural measures such as reforestation, zoning regulations, and stakeholder engagement. These strategies aim to balance tourism development with environmental conservation, ensuring long-term sustainability. This research provides a replicable framework for landslide risk assessment and offers actionable solutions to support resilience in environmentally sensitive regions.
