Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article, based on the Knowledge-Based Urban Development (KBUD) framework, aims to analyze the institutional, socio-environmental, and urban contexts of the innovation districts and areas in the Greater Sydney in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. The cases of Macquarie, Liverpool, and Western Sydney Aerotropolis (Bradfield City Centre) were selected from databases such as The Global Institute on Innovation Districts (GIID) and the International Association of Science Parks & Areas of Innovation (IASP). The research employs an exploratory and qualitative approach based on case studies, incorporating semi-structured interviews, field visits, and secondary data analysis. The collected data were systematized in the KBUD domains: economic, socio-cultural, spatial, and institutional. The results indicate that governance in these districts involves multiple public and private actors, with a top-down approach led by local governments. Despite efforts to promote sustainable urban mobility, individual motorized transport is still prevalent. Sustainable measures aligned with the circular economy and recognized environmental certifications were identified. The analysis reveals the importance of favorable public policies, infrastructure investments, and subsidy programs for the development of innovation districts and areas. The study contributes to understanding how these territories can promote sustainable development and urban resilience, highlighting the need for collaborative and integrated governance.
