Innovations and ongoing challenges in digital technologies for Parkinson’s disease

Abstract: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative movement disorder that affects more than 10 million people worldwide 1 . PD results in a constellation of motor and non-motor symptoms 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 that significantly impact quality of life, independence, and engagement in one’s community. Due to the degenerative nature and the different phenotypes of PD, longitudinal assessment is necessary for informing important clinical decisions such as choosing and dosing of medication, candidacy for invasive treatments (e.g., pumps and deep brain stimulation), and referral to various healthcare services (e.g., psychology, geriatric, rehabilitation). There are clear opportunities for emerging technologies to improve, automate, and make more accessible many aspects of clinical care and research in PD.
