Elucidation of atomic and magnetic structures of Al3+-doped Li-ferrite (LiFe5O8) compounds

Type: article
Abstract: Chemical stress for structural deformation in (Li0.6Al0.4)(Fe0.8Li0.2)2Fe3O8, denoted as Li60Al40, and (Li0.5Al0.5)(Fe0.75Li0.25)2Fe3O8, denoted as Li50Al50, was achieved by introducing Al3+ into alpha-LiFe5O8 known as a high-temperature multiferroic. These new solid solution compounds crystallize in the tetragonal space group P43212. Their magnetic spin arrangements at 300 K could be determined in the magnetic space group P4321’2’ using neutron powder diffraction data. The magnetic moments of Fe3+ ions within FeO6 in the B-sublattice are slightly canted to the crystallographic c axis and nearly antiparallel to those of FeO4 in the A-sublattice. In comparison to the Fe-rich Li60Al40, the Fe-poor Li50Al50 shows a stronger dilute effect for the higher Li content at the octahedral site Fe1b. The dilute effect is associated with the lowering of both saturation magnetization and TC. On the other hand, Li50Al50 shows large electric dipole moments in the strong distorted (Li, Al)O6 and (Fe, Li)O6 polyhedra. These new findings predict the second and the high order magneto-elastic-electric couplings at ambient conditions.
