Optimization of In-situ Integration of Gold Nanoparticles into Commercial Contact Lenses for Ophthalmic Applications
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) are widely researched nanomaterials with many applications in plasmonics, photonics, and healthcare. In this work, GNPs were integrated into commercial contact lenses using the unique in-situ method. This method effectively integrates the NPs into the matrix of the lenses rather than coating the surface. The in-situ integration method is superior due to its compatibility with various contact lens types and avoidance of GNPs leakage. This economic approach applies to widely available commercial contact lenses and can be added as a post-process step by the manufacturers. The contact lenses were subjected to a rigorous evaluation process, and the results indicated a 13.5 mm inhibition zone for bacterial reduction, a 78.9% shielding against green laser light intensity, and effective blocking of wavelengths problematic for red-green color blindness patients (540 -580 nm), hence, exhibiting multifunctional capabilities. The findings conclude the potentiality of the lenses being used in color vision enhancement, control of corneal infections, and eye protection against green lasers. In future, these contact lenses could be further functionalized to expand their utilization in drug release and ultra-violet light protection, expanding the developments in the ophthalmic devices.
