Mental Arithmetic as a Method to Increase Longevity and Slow Down Age-related Brain Changes

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In recent decades, mental arithmetic (MA) has become an important tool in neuropsychology and cognitive neurobiology. This method is based on performing calculations in the mind without the use of external tools, such as calculators or paper, which stimulates the active engagement of various areas of the brain.Research shows that regular mental arithmetic exercises contribute to the development of cognitive functions, improving attention, memory, and information processing speed.Furthermore, this type of training has the potential to slow down age-related brain changes, maintain brain plasticity, and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and dementia. This article examines the impact of MA on slowing down brain aging processes, drawing on current neurobiological theories and empirical data. The mechanisms through which mental arithmetic affects neuroplasticity, cognitive functions, and neurodegenerative processes are explored.Particular attention is paid to recent studies confirming the effectiveness of mental arithmetic as a method of preventing cognitive aging and increasing active longevity. The prospects of incorporating MA into cognitive rehabilitation and age-related disorder prevention programs are also discussed.
