The gut microbiome and its influence on chronic diseases: A public health approach to prevention and intervention
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The gut microbiome, a diverse community of microorganisms residing in the human gastrointestinal tract, plays a critical role in maintaining overall health. Emerging evidence suggests that alterations in the gut microbiota are associated with various chronic diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, and neurological disorders. Understanding the complex interactions between the gut microbiome and host physiology offers new opportunities for disease prevention and intervention. This review explores the relationship between the gut microbiome and chronic diseases, emphasizing public health strategies for prevention and intervention, including dietary modifications, probiotics, prebiotics, and microbiome-targeted therapies.
