Abstract: The publication discusses problems and challenges in the process of translating historical metaphors and metaphorical expressions. Various scientific approaches to the phenomenon of metaphor were presented, including linguistic and literary exploration of this issue. The phenomena of historical metaphor and historical metaphorical expression were also presented, as well as their specificity. A rudimentary concept of the levels of historical knowledge necessary to decode the meaning of the described linguistic phenomena at various levels of advancement were also presented. The publication concludes with an analysis of concrete examples of translation of the presented categories.
