Abstract: The article examines the features of the Islamic renaissance in the Kazakh SSR in comparison with other republics of Soviet Central Asia. The author analyzes the role of Kazakh national identity in the process of Islamic revival in Kazakhstan in 1985–1991. The article comprehends the peculiarities of the formation and development of The Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Kazakh SSR, establishing partnerships with the Muslim world and its counteraction to the radical confessional movement "Alash" and the penetration of extremist ideas from the Middle East into the republic.
