Radiological and Geological Interpretation Using Radioactivity and Electrical Resistivity Data in the Hit–Kubaisa Vicinity, the Western Part of Iraq

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study investigates current radioactivity levels in the Hit-Kubaisa area, Anbar Governorate, Iraq, considering recent population expansion and the development of unpaved roads and buildings. The research aims to assess radiation doses and environmental hazards, particularly in areas covered with recently supplied soil materials. Additionally, it seeks to understand the relationship between geological settings and natural radioactivity by integrating radiometric and resistivity surveys conducted in this study. Measurements of radiation exposure dose rates and total radioactivity were conducted at 68 sites using a Geiger Muller Counter. Additionally, resistivity measurements were recorded to complement the radiometric data and provide insights into the geological conditions of the area. The study found that the radiation dose rates range from 0.08 to 0.31 µSv/h, with higher levels observed near Hit town, which correlate with the presence of faults and bitumen seepages. The resistivity data revealed low-resistivity zones that aligned with areas of high radioactivity, indicating a connection between geological features and radiation distribution.
