Les confraternités franciscaines en Hongrie au Moyen Âge: état des connaissances et défis documentaires

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: How is it that Hungary keeps today the largest series of Franciscan letters of confraternity dating back to the Middle Ages, even though its medieval archives have severely suffered from the wars that happened on its soil since the sixteenth century? What links did the Franciscan Order have with the spiritual confraternity – in the sense of participation in spiritual goods – between the thirteenth and the early sixteenth century? Does the Hungarian context represent a particular case, or does it instead allow for a broader understanding of the reality in Western Christendom? These are the main questions raised in this article. It begins with an assessment of knowledge regarding the establishment of the Friars Minor in the kingdom of Hungary between the 1220s and the 1530s. Secondly, it examines the positioning of Franciscan leaders on the practice of spiritual confraternity during this period. Thirdly, based on the Hungarian example, it connects the success of entries into the Franciscan confraternity to the preservation modes of their written evidence, which substantially vary by country and social categories.
