Optimized Fresnel lens design for enhanced Passive infrared sensors in advanced security monitoring systems

Type: article
Abstract: Passive Infrared (PIR) motion sensors are widely used in residential and commercial security monitoring systems due to their reliability and cost-effectiveness. These sensors rely on pyroelectric detectors that convert incident infrared radiation into electrical signals. Traditional PIR sensor designs utilize an array of Fresnel lenses to focus infrared radiation onto the sensor's surface, enhancing the detection range and the ability to differentiate between moving objects and background noise. However, conventional coaxial Fresnel lens designs suffer from high light intensity concentration at the focal plane's center, reducing detection uniformity and sensitivity across the field of view. This paper introduces a novel Fresnel lens architecture that overcomes these limitations by enabling uniform light convergence across the sensor surface. The proposed design employs an innovative non-coaxial focusing technique to distribute infrared radiation more evenly, improving detection consistency. Ray tracing and optical simulation software are utilized to analyze focusing performance, evaluate illumination distribution, and quantify key parameters such as focusing efficiency and light uniformity. Results indicate that the newly designed Fresnel lens offers superior performance for small-angle, high-gain, and short focal length applications, making it particularly suited for next-generation PIR security monitoring systems. This advancement paves the way for more reliable and precise motion detection in various security environments.
