Abstract: Terminalia sericea (Combretaceae) roo, is one of the medicinal plants used in the traditional medicine of the district of Moamba, Maputo province in Mozambique for the treatment of malaria, according to an ethnobotanical survey done by us to the traditional medicine practitioners (TMP) of that district. species has wide therapeutic application in Mozambique and other African countries for the treatment of different diseases. This study aimed to validate the recipe of traditional Mozambican medicine for the treatment of malaria. The botanical identification of the specie under study held in the Lourenço Marques Agriculture Herbarium, of the Instituto de Investigação Agronómica de Moçambique; was obtained data from the total extract according to the traditional medicine of the TMP of the Moamba district, followed by the L-L fractionation with increasing polarity solvents; determination of anti-malarial activity in vitro by inhibition of β-hematin formation; chemical monitoring of secondary metabolites by TLC, LC/UV-DAD biochemical methods to obtain the chromatographic profile of the medicinal plant and detection of possible marker compounds in T. sericea and determination of the antioxidant activity by biochemical methods phosphomolybdenic acid, FRAP and DPPH. Terminalia sericea total extract (TSR) and fractions (TSR1 to TSR4) showed anti-malarial activity, TSR2 obtained 1.138 mg/ml of inhibited against the value of 0.417 mg/ml of quinine used as a positive control in this assay. The hydrolysable tannins compounds such as ellagic and gallic acids, combreglutinin and terchebulin was the class compounds were identified in TSR. TSR showed significant antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 115.74 μg/gEAA by the FRAP method, ascorbic acid was used as a positive control.
