Rifaximin in the spotlight: Are we ready to target the microbiome?

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Rifaximin is a minimally absorbed oral antibiotic, primarily targeting ammonia-producing gut bacteria, and is commonly used alongside lactulose to prevent recurrent hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in cirrhosis.1 Its favorable safety profile supports its use, including in patients with transjugular intrahepatic porto-systemic shunts, and it is under study for conditions like spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and refractory ascites. Hence, up to 30% of hospitalized patients with cirrhosis and infections receive rifaximin.
