Potential Impact of Hydrological Modeling on Power System Reliability

Year: 2025
Type: preprint
Abstract: As the shift towards renewable energy sources gradually replaces conventional resources, hydrogeneration plays an increasingly pivotal role in supplying ancillary and baseload services. However, the representation of hydrogeneration in power system models, utilized for both planning and operational studies (basecases), considers only nominal hydrological conditions. This discrepancy results in an overestimation of hydro generation capabilities, potentially leading to unforeseen reliability issues. This paper discusses some of the modeling gaps associated with hydro-generation representation in both, steady-state and dynamic models. Additionally, it introduces a tool developed by PNNL designed to address and mitigate observed gaps. The study highlights the impact of such improvements on frequency response studies in the Western Interconnection.
