High-Frequency Basal Cell Carcinoma: Risk Factors, Histological and Anatomical Patterns

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Background: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the most common skin cancer worldwide, accounts for over 85% of non-melanoma skin cancers in Europe. A subset of patients develops multiple BCCs within a few years, termed High-Frequency BCC (HF-BCC). The most commonly used definition in recent literature of HF-BCC is 9 or more BCCs within three years. While some cases are linked to genetic syndromes like Gorlin-Goltz or xeroderma pigmentosum, non-syndromic HF-BCC remains poorly characterized. Prior studies found HF-BCC being associated with male sex, a personal history of squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma, but further research needs to be done for risk-stratifying patients at highest risk for developing subsequent BCCs.
