Meeting the need for skin cancer capacity: Empowering non-dermatologists in the detection of skin cancer
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Background: Skin cancer is a growing public health concern in Europe, with dramatically rising incidence rates[1]. The WHO recognises the importance of early detection programs, especially for melanoma, but traditional healthcare models face capacity constraints. The 'One-Spot-Check' (OSC) consultations at the Dermatology Department of University Hospital Ghent showed promising results, with a skin cancer detection rate of 13.1% in a dataset from 2021[2] and 10% in a subsequent larger sample (unpublished data).
