Diagnostic challenges and the critical role of early multidisciplinary management of acral melanoma
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Background: Acral melanoma (AM) and its amelanotic variant (AAM) are rare, aggressive melanomas that predominantly affect acral sites, including the palms, soles and subungual regions. These malignancies often mimic benign conditions such as warts, calluses or infections, leading to delayed diagnosis. The importance of timely diagnosis and early multidisciplinary intervention in AM is underlined by both individual case analyses and broader systematic reviews, which highlight significant gaps in diagnostic approaches, particularly the underutilisation of biopsies for lesions on the lower extremities.
