Studying Marseille’s citadel : a multiple perspectives strategy

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: The MAP laboratory develops its research and training activities within a circle often referred to as “heritage sciences”, but which in reality covers a wide range of scientific questions, technical know-hows and specialities – encompassing observations (object materiality) and diachronic analysis (reasoning on historical clues). The result of this diversity of investigations is often disjointed research partnerships or programmes, and a feeling of not achieving a global understanding of the heritage assets under scrutiny. It was against this backdrop of dispersion that MAP decided to experiment with a refocusing approach around a common object of study, Marseille’s Citadel. Thus, a multi-faceted collaboration started with the actor in charge of its restoration and reconversion. This contribution illustrates the approach, placing side by side heterogeneous works (chronography, digitization strategies, extended realities). Its main aim is to contribute to a debate on disciplinary decompartmentalisation and, in a sense, the concept of slow science.
