Multi-objective VR-based strategy for preservation and promotion of cultural heritage

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: This paper shows the preliminary results of the PERCEIVE project. The PERCEIVE project explores the potential of virtual reality in being used for multisensory and multi-purpose design. PERCEIVE project aims to develop physically-based digital twins of cultural artifacts and sites, as well as integrate multisensory approaches to enhance user engagement through visual and auditory interactions. The project is divided into three work packages, with key objectives that include analysing VR advancements across different domains: lighting, acoustics, drawing, history and psychology, developing comprehensive methodologies for digital heritage modelling, and assessing user preferences for collaborative planning. Additionally, benchmarks for immersive, multi-objective VR experiences will be established, promoting preservation, education, and storytelling in cultural heritage. Initial findings highlight VR’s role in drawing, lighting, acoustics, and psychological research while highlighting limitations like data management, procedures standardisation, models’ complexity and cost. Photogrammetry was used to document Porta San Giovanni, producing high-resolution 3D models for future VR applications in different domains.
