Cittadella fortificata di Berat: conoscenza cronotattica
Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: This paper focuses on the fortified citadel of Berat in Albania. Also known in antiquity by the name of Antipatrea, it is one of the oldest Albanian cities founded by the Illyrians and conquered starting from the 14th century AD by the Ottoman Turks. Over the centuries the citadel has been continuously used up to the present day maintaining its residential feature. Over time, the building complex has undergone various restoration interventions which in some cases make it difficult to read the historical stratification. The project, which received the patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) and involves the Polytechnic, the University of Bari and the Institute of Albanological Studies of Tirana, is structured with a significant site survey activity, a study regarding the state of conservation and a chronotactic reading of the fortifications. The preliminary work phase, through the use of photogrammetry, made it possible to map the materials degradation, read the different stratigraphic wall units and interpret the different construction techniques. This work allowed to study the different construction phases of the fortress, including the ancient routes in the south of the castle no longer visible, placing them in relation and continuity with the archivistic and bibliographic documentation of the site.
