Abstract: Background: Uremic pruritus is a distressing symptom that affects patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Uremic xerosis and pruritus have multifactorial complex pathophysiology which is not yet completely understood. One of the suggested causes is the build-up of toxins in the blood due to kidney dysfunction and often results in dry skin or xerosis. Conventional emollients are often ineffective in treating severe cases of uremic xerosis, and patients may have local intolerance to certain products. Liquid paraffin and glycerol combination have shown promise in treating various skin conditions, but their efficacy in treating uremic pruritus in CKD patients remains understudied. This pilot study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of liquid paraffin and glycerol combination compared to routine skin care with mustard oil in managing uremic pruritus among CKD patients. Aim and Objective: The current study aimed to evaluate the baseline levels of uremic xerosis, uremic pruritus, and skin-related quality of life (SR-QOL) in CKD patients’ experimental and control groups. In addition, the study aimed to determine the effect of paraffin and glycerol application on the levels of uremic xerosis, uremic pruritus, and SR-QOL in the experimental group of CKD patients, as well as the effect of routine skin care with mustard oil on the same variables in the control group of CKD patients. Finally, the study aimed to compare and correlate the effectiveness of glycerin and paraffin in the experimental group with routine skin care with mustard oil in the control group of CKD patients. Materials and Methods: This study employed a randomized controlled trial design with a two-group pretest–posttest design (parallel group design) to investigate glycerine-paraffin’s efficacy in treating moderate xerosis, CKD-associated pruritus among CKD patients on maintenance hemodialysis. The study population consisted of 60 CKD patients with moderate xerosis followed by random allocation to the control and experimental group. Data collection was done using a questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic and clinical data, as well as three standardized scales: the E1 Gammal scale, the Pruritus Visual Analog Scale, and the Dermatology Life Quality Index Scale. Statistical analysis involved descriptive statistics, repeated measures ANOVA, and subgroup analysis. The results of this study will provide valuable information on the effectiveness of glycerine paraffin in treating uremic xerosis in CKD-aP patients. Results: This study revealed the positive effects of glycerine paraffin combination among CKD patients with uremic xerosis and uremic pruritus. The treatment was found to be effective in improving the QOL of patients with dermatological conditions at a level of 0.01 significant. Conclusion: The study found that glycerine-paraffin combination treatment effectively reduced pruritus in CKD patients with uremic xerosis, improving their QOL. The treatment showed a significant difference between the control and experimental groups at all three-time points, indicating positive efficacy.
