Tangible Evidence of Steppe Influences in the Eneolithic Don Forest Steppe

Abstract: The early and further Eneolithic achievements in the Don forest-steppe (5th–4th millennia BC) are traditionally associated with people who arrived there from the Dnieper-Don interfluve steppe. This area is a Mariupol cultural & historical area later integrated into Khvalynsk and Sredny Stog cultures. For a long time data on these landmark processes were explained in publications through ceramics characteristics obviously standing out from the local forest-steppe Neolithic tradition. When the Eneolithic is described as a stand-alone epoch, it is referred to as the Copper & Stone Age. Researchers avoid referring to the Copper Age alone and emphasize significance of stone items in the lifestyle of ancient people who were already aware of the first metal – copper. To date, having studied settlement and burial sites, Lipetsk and Voronezh archaeologists have collected data that prove peculiar ceramics not to be alone there. The findings show that the Don forest steppe reveals more paleometal items typical rather for vast steppes of the Eastern Europe. First and foremost, this fact is confirmed with by similar items discovered in closed steppe burial complexes. These finds list flint items (knives on big plates), weaponry (regularly shaped arrowheads and javelin heads), bone, horn and boar fang embellishments, rare metal items. It is noteworthy, that these finds can be compared to equivalent reference settlement (Razdorskoe 1, Strilcha Skelya, Dereivka) and burial (Mariupolsky, Nikolsky, Lysogorsky, Khvalynsky I burials) sites; along with that organic samples can be exposed to any direct absolute dating. This research focuses on analysis of these materials originating from lifestyle and burial sites (Golubaya Krinitsa, Cherkasskaya, Vasilyevsky Kordon 17, Ksizovo 6, etc.) in the Don forest-steppe region.
