Study of The Composition of Waste Generated in Organizations of Waste Pickers of Reusable And Recyclable Materials and Its Use As Refuse-Derived Fuel – Case Study: Cooperativa Recicla Campo Largo

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Objective: This study aims to analyze the composition of waste from waste picker organizations and its use as Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) in cement kilns. Method: The methodology involved a critical analysis of data to evaluate the composition of waste generated by waste picker organizations and its use as RDF in cement kilns. A case study was conducted at the Cooperativa Recicla in the Municipality of Campo Largo, with three gravimetric studies following the methodologies of the Instituto Recicleiros and the NBR 10.007 standard (ABNT, 2004). Results and Discussion: This study verified that the waste generated by the cooperative has high energy potential for use as RDF, given that the vast majority is composed of fabrics, plastics, and papers. Co-processing is a viable alternative for waste management, reducing environmental impacts and generating clean energy. Public-private partnerships and an integrated approach are essential for more sustainable management. Research Implications: The research highlights that co-processing waste in cement kilns represents an innovative strategy for managing urban solid waste, with significant implications for environmental, economic, and social sustainability. Originality/Value: The research innovates by demonstrating co-processing of waste as a sustainable solution for solid waste management, integrating environmental, economic, and social benefits, and offering a technical-scientific alternative for transforming non-recyclable materials into alternative fuels.
