Abstract: Through the research design of grounded theory, in the qualitative approach, between 2020 and 2022, with field actions in Quechua and Aimara communities, and review of available secondary sources, the exploration and formulation of criteria for the ethnobotanical characterization of the nominal variability of the native potato in the Puno region, Peruvian highlands, has been carried out. In the process, six matrices have been generated for an equal number of categories and a narrative to corroborate the differences. The responses to the environmental effects and the uses of each nominal variety make the difference with respect to the characterization proposed by the international potato center. The results are preliminary and are available to conservationists and academia for application as a means to validate, improve or modify the proposed ethnobotanical characterization. Keywords: nominal variability, ethnobotany, descriptors.
