The Effects Nurse Anesthesiology Programs Have on Physical Activity and Weight Gain

Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Nurse anesthesiology programs are known for their rigorous curriculum and increased stress among students. This stress may impact students’ coping mechanisms and contribute to adverse health outcomes, including weight gain. The objectives of this study were to assess the impact of stress on weight change, physical activity, and coping mechanisms among students during their tenure in nurse anesthesiology programs. Secondary objectives include evaluating perceptions of health and wellness support within these programs. An anonymous Survey Monkey was sent to all active members of the Florida Association of Nurse Anesthetists. Three-hundred fifty-two respondents voluntarily participated. The survey collected data on weight fluctuations, physical activity levels, coping strategies, and perceptions of health and wellness support during their education. 54% of participants had a BMI greater than 25 at the completion of the program. 62% reported decrease in physical activity levels, 56% reported increased unhealthy food consumption, and 40% reported alcohol usage. Most respondents did not perceive adequate health and wellness support during their program. Nurse anesthesiology programs should emphasize health and wellness initiatives throughout the curriculum to support students during the rigor of the program. Prioritizing stress management and promoting health and wellness could lessen the negative health impacts and enhance student well-being.
