Doctors and social media

Abstract: In recent times, we see many videos and posts by doctors in different social media platforms. I wanted to express my views and discuss the merits and demerits of such extensive use of social media for the spread of information. We as practicing doctors have to face the consequences good and bad; therefore, it is relevant to have a thorough understanding on the issue. We are living in times where news travels faster than at any point in human existence. The intention of any great invention is always good, but there will be forces in the society that can put these into misuse and can cause problems. For example, online banking makes it convenient for our financial transactions; however, misuse has led to financial scams. Doctors are also using social media to educate, communicate, and engage with their patients and the public about a certain disease or treatment. As social media has become a big part of our daily lives, people use platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Twitter, and LinkedIn to connect with others and share information. Therefore, the information given by doctors also travels along these lines. Let us examine some of the challenges that can be posed by the use of social media use. BENEFITS OF SOCIAL MEDIA FOR DOCTORS Sharing information One of the biggest benefits of social media for doctors is education. They can share important health tips, spread awareness about diseases, and correct false information. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many doctors used social media to explain the importance of vaccines, safety measures, and ways to stay healthy. This kind of information helped people to avoid getting infected. Connect with patients Social media also helps doctors connect with their patients in new ways. Doctors may not have enough time to explain a lot of aspects of a disease during the personal interviews with patients. Videos explaining the same will give an opportunity for patients to know the information in detail and at their leisure. Patients can follow doctors to get updates on new treatments, healthy lifestyle tips, and disease prevention. Listening to the doctor, in their home or devices helps patients connect with their doctor in a better way. Professional networking Doctors can showcase the cases they have done and in doing so share their experience to other professionals, who can learn and implement the same treatment strategies to their patients. Complex operations can be learnt online and performed by experts in other parts of the world. This avoids a physical travel and provides a skill set to the doctors at their doorstep. Doctors can connect with other healthcare professionals worldwide, exchange knowledge, and stay updated on medical advancements. Many medical conferences and workshops are also promoted through social media, allowing doctors to learn about new treatments, medical research, and innovations in health care. This helps them improve their skills and offer better care to their patients. CHALLENGES AND RISKS Risk of misinformation Despite the benefits, there are challenges that doctors face when using social media. One major issue is misinformation. False medical information spreads quickly online, and many people believe it without verifying the facts. Doctors have to work hard to correct these false claims and provide accurate medical knowledge. Many quacks and nonmedical people also declare themselves as experts by repeated posts on media and can spread false information. Such propaganda can be negated using an evidence-based approach and explaining the rationale on which a particular argument is being placed. Risk of misinterpretation Despite doctors speaking facts and giving correct information, it could be partly understood or misunderstood by the public resulting in questions to the treating physician. One of the challenges many doctors face is the “Internet knowledge” that patients walk in with and question the methods of treatment. It takes a lot of time to explain why this particular strategy is not being used and so on. Legal concerns Doctors should be sharing information responsibly, and every statement should be backed with evidence, as these posts are permanent records and can be held against the doctor or can be used in other situations. Of course, patient confidentiality is a key part of medical ethics. Doctors must never discuss any patient-identifiable information online. Breaking patient privacy laws can lead to legal trouble and loss of trust among patients. USING SOCIAL MEDIA WISELY To make the best use of social media, doctors should follow certain guidelines. They should only share verified and fact-based information. It is always better to quote the references based on which a doctor is making a certain claim. If there is no clarity in management of a particular aspect of disease, it is better to say so and be open about it. Doctors should always maintain a professional image, avoiding arguments or controversial discussions that could harm their credibility and follow ethical practice without resorting to naming or shaming patients or colleagues. The Hippocratic Oath forbids doctors to promote themselves, which is deemed unethical. Hence, they should avoid self-promotion and use media for the propagation of information for the benefit of patients. Private hospitals extend a lot of pressure on doctors to perform financially. This aspect should not be in any way allowed to affect the practice and spread of information. Doctors are always seen as healers who are above material benefits. It is our moral responsibility to maintain the image. Relation between patient and doctor plays an important role in the process of healing and doctors should never do anything to betray the trust placed on them. Doctors can also use social media to promote healthy habits and encourage people to seek medical help when needed. Many people hesitate to visit a doctor due to fear or lack of knowledge. Social media can help remove these fears and encourage people to take better care of their health. CONCLUSION Social media is a powerful tool for doctors. It helps them educate, connect, and stay informed. However, we must use it wisely and responsibly to maintain trust and professionalism in the medical field. By following ethical guidelines and sharing accurate information, doctors can make a positive impact on society while protecting their own reputation and the privacy of their patients.
