Abstract: Staple food crops usually have low micronutrients. Individuals whose diets rely heavily on staple food crops with poor dietary diversity can suffer from micronutrient deficiencies. Biofortification involves breeding of staple crops that are micronutrient-dense and high yielding for example the iron-biofortified beans. The main aim of the study was to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of farmers in Makoni district, in Zimbabwe on production and consumption of biofortified NUA 45 sugar beans. A total of 299 household surveys and 4 Focus Group Discussions were conducted in Makoni district to determine the knowledge, attitudes and practices on production and consumption of the biofortified NUA45 sugar beans. This study revealed that the farmers in Makoni district were highly knowledgeable about biofortified crops and the acceptance, production and consumption of NUA 45 sugar beans was high. Availability of certified biofortified seed at local markets, raising awareness on biofortification and its benefits increases the acceptance, knowledge, production and consumption of NUA 45 sugar beans by farmers.
