Abstract: Background: The Tangkhul Tribe is a distinct ethnic group with a rich variety of food resources. They have a strong connection to their ethnic culture, and the consumption of indigenous and traditional foods plays a significant role in their daily diet. Objectives: The primary aim of this study was to investigate the socio-economic status and prevalence of obesity among 680 Tangkhul tribal women aged 30 -75years, representing this specific ethnic group in Ukhrul District, Manipur. Methods: Anthropometric measurements, including height, weight, waist circumference, and hip circumference were recorded. Body Mass Index and Waist-Hip Ratio were calculated using the Asian criteria outlined by the World Health Organization. Additionally, blood pressure levels were documented. Results: The study found that the majority of the tribal women had a low income; nonetheless, there was a prevalence of class I obesity (20.9%) and class II obesity (3%). Around 39.9% were identified as being at high risk for central obesity (WHR > 0.85), even though some were categorized as having a normal BMI or non-obese status. Conclusion: The increasing rates of obesity among women aged 30-75 years present numerous challenges, including financial burdens, reduced employability, and a diminished quality of life. Addressing the root causes of obesity and its consequences on socio-economic status through targeted interventions can significantly contribute to enhancing the overall health and well-being of the community.
