Abstract: In March 2025, the European Commission launched the Skills Union initiative, which aims to close skills gaps and strengthen EU competitiveness. The initiative emphasises, among other things, access to education for all, support for businesses in finding qualified people and recognition of qualifications across Europe. Opinions on the initiative are divided, with sceptics pointing to interference in national education systems, while supporters stress the opportunities for development in the field of education as well. In most areas of the Skills Union, Slovenia is increasingly ranked average in international surveys, but national and European projects are already promoting the strengthening of basic skills, digital competences, STEM skills and computational thinking. Upcoming projects under the initiative will contribute to equipping young people to enter the labour market on an equal footing, without disadvantages, and to a comprehensive transformation of education and networking with different stakeholders.
