Abstract: Background and Objectives: This study aimed to elucidate the effects of statins on recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) after mitral valve surgery and maze operation in patients with mitral valve disease and AF.Methods: A total of 129 patients (age, 58.9±9.4 years; 90 women) who received mitral valve surgery and maze operation were included. The patients were grouped into the statin and no-statin groups according to statin during the perioperative period.Clinical recurrence was defined as detection of AF or atrial flutter in 12-lead electrocardiogram or AF or atrial flutter >30 s in Holter monitoring 3 months after maze operation. Results:The statin and no-statin groups comprised 32 and 97 patients, respectively. The patients were followed up for 62.3±28.1 months. The patients in the statin group had older age, less frequency of diabetes, and lower total and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels than the patients in the no-statin group. No significant difference in AF-free survival was observed between the two groups (hazard ratio, 1.500 [0.752-2.989];p=0.249). Conclusions: Statins did not reduce AF recurrence rate in patients who received mitral valve surgery and maze operation.
