Empowering Participants through Informed Consent: The Ethics Committee’s Role

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Informed consent is a cornerstone of ethical biomedical research, ensuring respect for participants’ autonomy, dignity, and rights. For ethics committees (ECs), evaluating the informed consent process and documentation is a critical responsibility to safeguard participants while maintaining compliance with ethical and legal standards. This article examines informed consent from the perspective of ECs, outlining its importance, the review process, and common challenges. Key areas of focus include evaluating consent documents for clarity, ensuring voluntariness and cultural sensitivity during the consent process, and implementing additional safeguards for vulnerable populations. The discussion highlights real-world challenges such as complex study protocols, language barriers, and dynamic changes to research protocols, offering practical examples and strategies to address them. Best practices for ECs, including the use of standardized templates, collaboration with stakeholders, and continuous training, are proposed to enhance the efficacy of informed consent processes. By adopting a proactive and participant-centered approach, ECs play a vital role in fostering ethical research practices and building trust among research participants.
