A Study on the Landscape and Enhancement Pathways of Traditional Villages in Fujian from the Perspective of Regional Cultural Heritage Genes: A Case Study of Yangxia Village, Fujian Province

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Traditional villages play a crucial role in urban-rural integration and cultural confidence, carrying rich cultural heritage and regional history. However, modernization poses challenges like heritage loss and weakened cultural values. This study examines Yangxia Village, a provincial-level historical and cultural village in Fujian, focusing on its traditional cultural heritage landscape features. It highlights the central role of clan culture, which shapes the village's spatial structure and architectural style, exemplified by over 20 ancestral halls that reflect both material and non-material cultural aspects. The village’s cultural landscape showcases the diversity of Minnan culture, with distinctive architectural features like swallowtail ridge roofs and folk activities such as the God Procession and Chao opera. Key cultural heritage elements, including the village’s feng shui layout and the cluster of buildings around ancestral halls, illustrate the fusion of clan and Minnan cultures. Additionally, dialects, beliefs, and folk practices contribute to the village’s cultural richness. The study suggests that with proper protection strategies, it is possible to preserve regional cultural heritage while fostering rural development, promoting cultural confidence, and revitalizing rural culture.
