Politics and Religion: A Comparative Study of the Portrait of Roger II and Mogao Cave Mural

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper explores the interplay between politics and religion in medieval art through a comparative study of the Portrait of Roger II and the Rebound Pipa Feitian mural from Dunhuangs Mogao Caves. The mosaic of Roger II, housed in the Church of St. Mary of the Admiral in Palermo, Italy, employs Byzantine iconography to depict the kings divine coronation, reinforcing his legitimacy through Christian theological symbolism. In contrast, the Feitian mural from Cave 112 at Dunhuang Mogao Cave reflects the integration of Buddhist cosmology with political authority, reflecting the Tang Dynastys endorsement of cultural diversity as a means of consolidating power. Despite their distinct cultural contexts, both artworks demonstrate the pervasive function of religious imagery in affirming rulership and shaping collective identity. By exploring the artistic, spiritual, and political dimensions of these masterpieces, this paper underscores the universal significance of sacred visual culture as a tool for governance and cultural cohesion across civilizations.
