Abstract: The article examines the processes of change and improvement of NATO’s political and military structures in accordance with internal and external threats, including terrorist threats. It has been proven that the optimization of military management bodies at the strategic and operational level enabled the NATO command to respond effectively to threats and make the right making decisions. The purpose of the article is to study the experience of the transformation of NATO’s political and military institutions and their operational decisions regarding the involvement of military contingents to fight international terrorism. Research methodology. The general scientific principles of historicism, objectivity and comprehensiveness, systematicity and specificity became the methodological basis. They are implemented through the use of general scientific methods of scientific knowledge (analysis and synthesis, qualification, analogy and comparison, generalization) and special methods of historical research (historical-systemic, historical-chronological, historical-comparative, historical-genetic). The scientific novelty of the obtained results lies in the fact that the author for the first time summarized the processes ofchange and improvement of NATO’s military-political structures and their decisionmaking on the involvement of military contingents to fight international terrorism at the strategic and operational levels. Conclusions. In addition to its own Euro-Atlantic region, which was designated as NATO’s area of responsibility, the NATO military command began to consider the use of armed forces in regions that, in the opinion of the NATO command, had become critical to the security of the Alliance. To this end, NATO has significantly improved political institutions and developed the military structure of military administration bodies, and increased the number of forces and means. Today, NATO has extremely valuable experience in the fight against asymmetric threats and the fight against terrorism. In order to organize and carry out effective counter-terrorism measures, NATO has created a system of military management bodies that enables management in remote theaters of war and combating terrorist groups on land, in the air, and at sea.
