Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Objective: The paper aims to examine and synthesize key theoretical frameworks that underpin the integration of sustainability factors—specifically Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria—into institutional investment decision-making. Method: A comprehensive literature review was conducted, analyzing frameworks including Behavioral Finance, Modern Portfolio Theory, Risk Management, Value Creation, Institutional, Agency, Socially Responsible Investment, and Reputational Theories. These theories were evaluated to understand their role in guiding investors toward incorporating sustainability considerations alongside traditional financial objectives. Results: The study reveals that incorporating ESG criteria not only enhances risk management and portfolio diversification but also aligns investment strategies with long-term financial performance and ethical standards. It highlights how behavioral biases, market dynamics, and regulatory pressures collectively influence sustainable investment practices. The review indicates that firms with robust ESG practices tend to achieve lower volatility and improved risk-adjusted returns, suggesting a positive correlation between sustainability integration and financial resilience. Practical Implications: Institutional investors can leverage these frameworks to optimize investment strategies, balancing profitability with social and environmental responsibilities. This approach enables improved risk assessment, enhanced stakeholder trust, and better alignment with global sustainability standards. Conclusions: Integrating sustainability factors into investment decisions is both theoretically sound and practically advantageous. By adopting ESG-oriented strategies, institutional investors can achieve superior long-term outcomes, ensuring that financial goals are met while contributing to broader societal and environmental objectives.
