Prensa y movimiento social: los casos de Presencia Negra y Mundo Afro en la emergencia de los movimientos afrolatinoamericanos contemporáneos
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Objective /context: This article explores the relationship between the late black/Afro press and the organizing process of contemporary Afro-Latin American movements. It interrogates the possible links between the two, in a period ranging from the 1970s to the 1990s. In this temporal space, on the one hand, we see the development of the last printed publishing projects, driven by collectives that assume a black/Afro-descendant identity and address a reading public that also recognizes itself as such, at a time of changes, such as the shift from printed to digital publications; on the other hand, the Afro-Latin American movements grew and consolidated, acquiring relevance and visibility at the international level. Methodology: The newspaper Presencia Negra (Bogota, 1979-1998) from Colombia and the magazine Mundo Afro (Montevideo, 1988-1993/1997-1998) from Uruguay were selected to explore such a crossing. Their editorial lines were analyzed from a comparative perspective, considering the text-context relationship in each case. Originality: it is expected to contribute both to the field of Afro-Latin American studies and to that of Latin American periodicals in the visualization of black/Afro newspapers and magazines as collective forms of thought production, starting from recent cases that emerged at the end of the 20th century. Conclusions: Although the black/afro press did not play a leading role in the organizational process at the end of the 20th century, it was part of its framework and facilitated in some cases, such as those reviewed, the dissemination and discussion of its purposes and demands.
