Abstract: The paper considers approaches to using IEEE and CIGRE test schemes as a tool for conducting scientific research of power systems. Difficulties in using basic test schemes for various research tasks and possibilities for solving emerging problems are revealed. Analysis of information contained in publicly available basic test schemes showed that this information is insufficient for modern research tasks. In cases where missing information can be added locally and independently for each of the power system nodes, accounting for additional information in test models does not cause problems. If self-consistent data for all power system nodes is required, it is preferable to search for an IEEE scheme variant with the author's database optimal for the study or to use alternative databases and test schemes. A review of the repository containing the most complete database of publicly available test schemes is conducted.
