Type: article
Abstract: In recent years, the production of nanomaterials (NMs) has attracted significant attention due to their unique properties and potential applications across diverse industries. However, ensuring the production of safe NMs, particularly at scale, remains a significant challenge. This paper presents Safety by Process Control, a novel framework to implement Safety by Design (SbD) in the production stage that integrates dynamic first-principles modeling, Model Predictive Control (MPC) and real-time monitoring of safety-related characteristics. The integration of a toxicity prediction model allows for the proactive management of potential health risks. This approach enables the real-time prediction and adjustment of critical NM properties, such as size distribution and toxicity, directly within the production process. Through a case study on silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), it is demonstrated that the proposed framework offers a scalable and efficient approach for producing high-quality and safe NMs, which can be easily adapted to various other types of NMs.
