Comparison study of PFAS in farmed and wild shrimps from Brazil. Are wild shrimps less contaminated than farmed shrimps?

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Due to the abundant sources of per – and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), open ocean fisheries and aquaculture might show different levels and species of PFAS, however, little is available on this topic from the Southern Hemisphere. In this study, farmed and wild shrimps from Brazil were investigated for more than 30 different PFAS. Extractable organofluorine (EOF), inorganic- and total fluorine content were also evaluated. Farmed and wild shrimps overall contained the similar Σc(PFASTarget) (2.2 ± 2.4 ng g-1 and 2.7 ± 1.6 ng g-1 respectively, p>0.05), while wild shrimps contained almost double the EOF concentration than farmed shrimps (424 ± 104 ng F g-1 and 231 ± 63 ng F g-1). PFAS intake through shrimp consumption was calculated to be below the tolerable weekly intake (defined by EFSA) using Σc(PFASTarget) while using EOF it was orders of magnitude higher (150 - 1500 ng kg-1 bodyweight), implying potential exposure to organofluorines.
