Utopia of artificial intelligence and Orthodox anthropology

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The article discusses the development of the ideology of artificial intelligence against the background of the traditional distinction in the mind between reason (voug) and understanding (Siavoia), which dates back to ancient philosophy. The author discusses the history of the development of the idea of a universal algorithm, which begins with Aristotle’s Organon, passes through Descartes’s mathesis univesrsalis project, Leibniz’s work on constructing the “Universal Characteristic”, the creation of mathematical logic and formal languages of the 20th century. The work shows that the distinction between explanation and understanding, presented in the tradition of the Baden School of Neo-Kantianism, is a sober corrective to the utopian projects of scientism. In terms of Orthodox anthropology, the hypostatic essence of man, which is not reducible to nature, acts as an obstacle to the creation of artificial intelligence. The author emphasizes that the freedom with which man is endowed by God in creation is fundamentally not amenable to modeling using information technology. The presented study also examines examples of unsuccessful attempts to model human creativity using information programs.
