How does the religiosity-gender attitudes nexus among Dutch Muslims differ by origin backgrounds and migration motives?

Abstract: In contrast to “public knowledge” that Islam and gender equality are juxtaposed, research has suggested a complex relationship in which Islamic religiosity relation to Muslims’ support for public-sphere gender equality is dependent on the spatiotemporal context. At the same time, few public opinion studies have connected these dots by testing this and engaging with the question which contextual factors mold religiosity’s impact and how. This study does. It presents novel arguments on how Islamic religiosity’s impact on gender attitudes is likely to differ by country of origin and motivations for migrating. Drawing on a uniquely large Dutch survey sample collected among migrants from Iran, Morocco, Somalia and Turkey in 2006, 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2020, our analyses show that the religiosity-gender attitudes linkage is complex and varies by migration background and motive being far from universally negative.
