Nanostructured materials for smart food packaging: Integrating preservation and antimicrobial properties

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This review examines the emerging role of nanostructured materials in developing advanced food packaging systems that integrate preservation and antimicrobial properties. The evolution of packaging technology from basic containment to sophisticated smart systems has been driven by growing demands for extended shelf life and enhanced food safety. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of various nanostructured materials, including metal nanoparticles, metal oxides, organic nanostructures, and composite materials, exploring their mechanisms of antimicrobial action and preservation capabilities. In particular, our work highlights innovative integration strategies and state-of-the-art fabrication methods that provide a new perspective on employing nanostructured materials for dual functionality in smart food packaging. The review evaluates the performance of these materials in real-world applications through antimicrobial efficacy testing and shelf-life extension studies. Current challenges in regulatory compliance, safety assessments, and environmental sustainability are addressed, alongside emerging opportunities in advanced manufacturing and smart technology integration. The synthesis of available research demonstrates the significant potential of nanostructured materials in revolutionizing food packaging while highlighting the need for continued investigation into safety and scalability.
