Simple abnormality diagnosis method for layered structures using force measurement data of an inertial vibrator

Abstract: • A method using the load-cell output of an inertial vibrator was proposed for diagnosing initial abnormalities in layered structures. • An abnormal condition was defined as reduced spring constant in the walls of layered structures. • Based on the sensitivity analysis theory, the spring-constant reduction can be calculated from the resonant and anti-resonant peak frequencies read from the load-cell output. In this study, a simple method for diagnosing abnormalities in a multilayered building is proposed from the perspective of mechanical engineering. The building is modeled as a multi-degree-of-freedom system, with the floor slab represented as a mass element, walls and columns represented as spring elements, and a decrease in the spring constant defined as an abnormality. In general abnormality diagnosis methods using vibration characteristics, the response of several layers or at least one layer must be measured to identify the level and location of the abnormality. However, the proposed method eliminates this requirement and identifies abnormalities using only the force measurement data from an inertial shaker installed on the top floor of the building. Specifically, the change in the spring constant is determined through sensitivity analysis theory, using the resonant and anti-resonant peak frequencies read from the force measurement data, which differ between normal and abnormal conditions. Using the anti-resonant peak frequency, the amount of information needed to identify the changes in the spring constant can be increased. In numerical simulations and experiments, the method was verified using a three-layered model, in which an abnormality was assumed to occur in the first layer, and the change in the spring constant was identified. We anticipate that the proposed method will contribute significantly to the structural health monitoring of actual buildings.
