The Impact of AI Tools on ESL Learners’ Engagement and Language Learning Motivation

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study explores the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) tools on the engagement and language learning motivation of English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. By analyzing the application of various AI tools in language learning environments, the research finds that these tools not only significantly enhance learners' motivation but also boost their sense of active participation through personalized feedback and real-time error correction mechanisms. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to delve into learners’ interaction experiences and motivational shifts while using AI tools. Results show that the interactivity and diverse learning resources provided by AI tools effectively improve learners’ self-efficacy and intrinsic motivation. Especially among ESL learners, AI tools foster the formation of learning communities and emotional connections, thereby enhancing language acquisition outcomes. The study also reveals cultural differences in how learners use AI tools, suggesting that their design should account for individual needs and cultural diversity to better support the learning process. Based on these findings, the study provides practical guidance for educators and offers a solid theoretical foundation and practical strategies for future research in AI-assisted language learning.
