A Mobile Wall Mockup (MWM) as a Learning Tool for Construction and Engineering Education

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Mockups play a critical role in construction and engineering, offering tangible ways to understand complex system components and improve quality.Without the use of mockups, it can be challenging to convey how various parts of a structure come together. This challenge is particularly evident in educational settings, where students may struggle to visualize buildings and their components in three dimensions, a crucial skill for their future careers. To bridge this gap, educational tools like physical and virtual mockups are invaluable, helping students better understand both individual material components and how those components are assembled. However, these tools are not without their own set of challenges, such as cost, space, and complexity. In an effort to overcome these obstacles, our team developed a mobile wall mockup (MWM) specifically designed to serve as a hands-on learning tool in construction and engineering education. This paper utilizes a case study approach to detail the design and construction process of the MWM, providing step-by-step insights into how it was conceived and built.Additionally, we discuss the initial use of the MWM in an educational context, as well as the feedback from students and instructors.Preliminary results suggest that the MWM is highly effective in communicating key concepts related to material and assembly components, while also engaging students with real-world construction materials.Early indications are promising, but further research is needed to rigorously evaluate its long-term effectiveness in enhancing student learning and engagement in construction education.
