The Effectiveness of Multiple-Attempt-Testing in Upper Engineering Classes: Kinematics of Mechanisms and Introduction to Vibrations and Controls

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Although it is still under investigation, the Multiple-Attempt-Testing (MAT) has so far proven to be one effective method in supporting and assisting students in fundamental engineering classes. However, we would like to verify its effectiveness in upper undergraduate courses as well. There were two large classes conducted virtually, in Summer 2021 during COVID-19, namely, Kinematics of Mechanisms and Introduction to Vibrations and Controls with Single-Attempt-Testing (SAT).In Summer 2024, however, these courses were delivered in Mixed-mode and with MAT.In this paper, we compare the results of the tests.During Summer 2021, the tests were conducted remotely, and synchronously using LockDown Browser, Respondus Monitor and Proctor Hub, while in Summer 2024, the students were given all their tests with two attempts per test, conducted asynchronously in the Evaluation Testing Center (EPC).They had a week to finish both attempts with tests review sessions between attempts.Due to the digital environment, the tests were corrected automatically, using the Learning Management System (LMS), CANVAS, and the students saw their grades instantly. All the tests have very large questions banks with basic problems for each test, from which more problems are generated using the system multi-problem generation, to maintain academic integrity. The effectiveness of the MAT testing-learning style is in allowing the students to realize their mistakes, learn from them, be given another chance to be tested and to prove their understanding. The method gives hope, comfort and increases the success rates and students' success in the course and eventually in the program.
