Emerging Threat of Food Contamination by Microplastics and its Influence on Safety and Human Perspective

Abstract: magnetic pieces of evidence. In a recent report, humanity's network produced 10 billion plastic tons, 80% of which were disposed of into the environment. The increasing number of environmental microplastics in aquatic environments is important for food safety concerns. The use of plastic in human life since the 1950s has resulted in a substantial increase in debris volume.Nearly 367 million tons of plastic were made worldwide in 2020.Currently, in the food sector, one of the greatest concerns is the function that materials for packaging play regarding microplastic contamination in food processing [3].Based on the various reports, the presence of microplastics in food products and their possible health effects have been identified.Microplastics originated from many packing sources and polymers-based additives which are used in various food processing and physical qualities, such as stabilizers, pigments, flame retardants, fillers, plasticizers, foaming, and antistatic agents [4].Microplastics and their products are ABSTRACT Extensive plastic use across industries such as automotive, construction, and packaging has significantly contributed to environmental concerns.Understanding the sources of microplastic contamination in food and its associated health risks is crucial for minimizing exposure. As a result, this issue has gained attention due to its potential negative impact on human health.Food contamination remains a serious public health threat, often leading to food borne illnesses with severe or even fatal consequences.Biological contamination-caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites-is the most common type. The globalization of the food supply chain has further complicated food safety monitoring.Ensuring food safety requires stringent regulations, regular inspections, and public education on safe food handling practices.
