Bridging the Gap: a Comparative Study of Quality Improvement Knowledge and Engagement Among Direct Care Nurses and Nurse Leaders
Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study explores the understanding and engagement levels of nurses in Quality Improvement (QI) projects. The research examined 69 nurses from various hospitals in the Aravalli district of Gujarat, specifically focusing on 37 direct care nurses (comprising staff and senior staff nurses) and 32 nurse leaders (including nurse supervisors and managers). A structured knowledge questionnaire and a Likert scale for engagement were employed to assess the participants' understanding and involvement in QI initiatives. The findings revealed that while nurse leaders exhibited slightly higher engagement in QI projects, both groups demonstrated comparable levels of knowledge regarding QI principles and practices. These results reveal the importance of providing enhanced support and implementing targeted programs to encourage and facilitate greater participation in QI activities across all nursing tiers. This study emphasizes the need to bridge the gap between knowledge and engagement, fostering a more robust and inclusive approach to quality improvement within the nursing profession. The study suggests that a comprehensive approach is needed, including tailored training programs, mentorship opportunities, and clear communication channels, to empower nurses at all levels to actively participate in QI initiatives and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement within healthcare settings.
